Flowers Blooming NOW

In Abashiri and most of eastern Hokkaido spring flowers start from the yellow adonis followed by the light green butterbur buds and then the white skunk cabbage.

The adonis that “pops out” from the brown ground where there are still patches of snow gives me the relief that the long winter is finally coming to an end! And the butterbur (“fuki” in Japanese) buds that fall in the category of “wild mountain vegetables” (although you can see them virtually anywhere in eastern Hokkaido!) make my mouth water for their tempura!

This year the skunk cabbage came to full bloom about a week earlier than usual. It’s in full bloom right now!! Probably it’s the warm winter that caused this surprise.

Abashiri is said to have the largest habitat of skunk cabbage in the Yobito area. It’s right behind Lake Abashiri along the JR track. You can see it from the train, but I really recommend you get off at Yobito station and take a short walk to the flower patch❤

These are pictures of the skunk cabbage from Yobito area. They grow in marshy ground.

Travel to Abashiri and eastern Hokkaido for a special moment just for yourself.
