THINGS
TO DO
Cultural Experience
with Food Tasting

We provide 3 food tasting experiences: lunch at a local’s home, soba kaiseki lunch, and sake tasting. The 2 lunch plans are hosted by fun and friendly locals who’ll help you to learn more about the Japanese lifestyle, drinking/eating style as well as customs & traditions. English interpreter will be assisting you for the above 2 lunch plans. Since the sake tasting plan is more of an experience-oriented than learning, we’ll let you be on your own with no interpreters unless requested.

Private Lunch at a Host Home

A friend of mine, Hiroko, will greet us at her home in the residential area of Abashiri. Hiroko is a local with 2 grownup children. We’ll be visiting her house and be invited to her homemade lunch. The lunch menu that will change every day will not be the stereotype Japanese food like sushi or tempura, but something that locals eat commonly for lunch. Hiroko and I planned this lunch so that the visitors to Abashiri can have a hands-on understanding of the lives of the people here - how we think and what we appreciate.

Private Soba Kaiseki Lunch

A full course private soba lunch at an intimate setting. The restaurant is located in Mt. Tento offering one of Abashiri’s best views, overlooking a vast flower garden, woods, the Okhotsk Sea and the Shiretoko mountain range. In winter the garden turns into a snow-covered plain. In other seasons, you may want to take a stroll after the soba experience or even go for cherry picking! You might also be interested in hearing personal stories or learn the traditional recipes from the chef after lunch.

Sake Tasting at a Sushi Bar

Just like wine, there’s a subtle taste difference in each sake depending on the breweries and also its process of brewing. Hokkaido alone has more than 10 breweries, meaning there’s more than 10 varieties of sake in Hokkaido. You’ll be able to try out 4 different sake brewed in Hokkaido. Each sake will come in ochoko (small cups), 4 in total which adds up to 1 tokkuri (180cc sake bottle). You usually can’t order sake in smaller container than a tokkuri so for those who aren’t a strong drinker, it’s an opportunity to try out 4 different sake at one time. Also included in the sake tasting menu is a small appetizer using local ingredients. You can choose between sushi (4 pcs) or a plate of sashimi.

An interpreter will not accompany this activity.
